Movie Review: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Elsa S. Customer suggests Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (in Incredibly Strange). Speaking as your attorney, I advise you to grab ahold of this movie and cram it into your head whichever way necessary. Gilliam’s film version of the notorious Hunter S. Thompson tome took a lot of blows when it was released, and rightly so. It’s a mess. But for me it reproduces with unsettling accuracy the book’s visceral sense of impossibly ceaseless meltdown. If that doesn’t grab you, try this: Johnny Depp, Benicio del Toro, Gary Busey, Lyle Lovett, Katherine Helmond, Michael Jeter, Loraine Newman, Elleen Barkin, Mark Harmon, Christina Ricci, Flea, Harry Dean Stanton, Penn Gillette, Tobey MacGuire, Cameron Diaz. Watch it, absorb it, and don’t stop to ponder the absurdities and shortcomings. Indeed, don’t stop for any reason: this is bat country.
