TV Review: ‘I’m Alan Partridge’

Dennis suggests “I’m Alan Partridge” (in British Comedy). This second series starring Steve Coogan’s excruciatingly hilarious alter ego finds Alan, after the cancellation of his legendarily awful chat show “Knowing Me, Knowing You” (also cringingly funny) clinging to the early morning slot on radio Norwich and staying as the only guest at a crummy travel hotel, all the while plotting to get the BBC to grant him a second chance. The supremely unctuous Partridge is hated by the hotel staff, rude to his loyal female assistant, and subjected to the funniest parade of images-1indignities since Basil Fawlty. For fans of the comedy of pain, Coogan makes the perfect conduit for our schadenfreude; he’s perfected the necessary mixture of despicableness and desperate, yawning vulnerablity. This show’s first episode contains perhaps the most hilarious two word utterance I’ve ever heard. No…I will not tell you what it was until you watch it…
